Shrink wrap does an excellent job of sealing out snow, ice, and moisture. But there’s one thing to understand before the crew arrives: a tight, weather-proof seal protects whatever is underneath it, including any problems you leave in place. Moisture, dirt, and pests that are sealed in stay sealed in all winter.

A little prep before wrap day makes the difference between opening your boat or RV in spring to a clean, dry, ready-to-go vehicle and opening it to a surprise. Here’s a practical checklist.

For Boats

  • Wash and dry the exterior. Dirt, salt, and grime left on the hull and deck can stain or etch surfaces over a long winter. Let everything dry fully before wrapping.
  • Remove loose and valuable items. Take out electronics, cushions, life jackets, documents, and anything that can mold, fade, or walk off. Store them indoors.
  • Take care of winterization first. Engine, water systems, and fuel should be winterized per your manufacturer’s guidance, either by you or by your marina or mechanic, before the wrap goes on.
  • Fix known leaks. If water can get in through a hatch, window, or seam, the wrap will keep it from drying out. Address it first.
  • Point out sharp edges and projections. Antennas, rails, cleats, and rigging can be hard on wrap material. Let the crew know so they can pad or work around them.
  • Make sure the boat is accessible and supported. Whether it’s on a trailer, stands, or a cradle, the crew needs safe access all the way around it.

For RVs and Campers

  • Clean the interior and exterior. Wipe down surfaces, empty the refrigerator, and clear out food and anything else that could attract pests during storage.
  • Remove soft goods. Bedding, towels, and cushions hold moisture and odor. Store them at home.
  • Check the roof and seals. Look over roof seams, vents, and window seals for cracks or gaps. A small leak sealed under wrap can turn into a bigger problem by spring.
  • Handle your winterization steps. Plumbing and water systems should be winterized according to your owner’s manual before storage.
  • Leave access clear. Make sure the RV is parked where the crew can reach every side and the roof.

For Patio Furniture and Outdoor Equipment

  • Clean it first. Remove dirt, pollen, and debris, then let everything dry completely. Wrapping damp furniture traps moisture against the surfaces you’re trying to protect.
  • Store cushions indoors. Fabric cushions can mildew even inside a sealed wrap, so it’s best to keep them in a dry spot in the house or garage.
  • Group pieces thoughtfully. Arranging furniture in a tidy cluster makes for a snugger, more efficient wrap.
  • Prep grills and equipment. Clean grills, disconnect fuel sources, and make sure anything with moving parts or fluids is ready for storage.

For Firewood

  • Use seasoned, dry wood. Wrapping wet wood just locks the moisture in. Make sure the wood is dry before it’s covered.
  • Stack it neatly. A stable, well-organized stack is easier to wrap and holds up better under snow and wind.
  • Keep the stack off bare ground where possible, which helps it stay drier from below.

A Few General Tips

  • Be there for the estimate, or send details. Dimensions, the type of boat or RV, and where it’s located help produce an accurate quote. Our timing guide explains when to book so you’re not squeezed into the seasonal rush.
  • Clear the work area. Remove vehicles, toys, and clutter from around what’s being wrapped so the crew can work safely and efficiently.
  • Note any special concerns. If there’s a fragile fitting, a tight spot, or a specific area you’re worried about, mention it when you book.

Why Prep Pays Off in Spring

Most of the work in a good winter storage plan happens before the wrap goes on. A clean, dry boat, RV, or set of furniture under a tight, custom-fit wrap is exactly what you want to find when the weather warms up, and a bit of effort now makes uncovering it a pleasure instead of a project.

PA Shrink Wrapping provides custom-fit shrink wrapping for boats, RVs and campers, patio furniture and outdoor equipment, and firewood throughout Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, using commercial-grade materials, and we’re fully insured.
